I studied polymer science. My university, UMIST (now part of the University of the Manchester) ran the first polymer science degree courses in the UK. Today, we still teach a lot of polymer materials science within our Materials Science course.

I decided I wanted to study chemistry when I was in the final year of my A Levels. I enjoyed it the most and my A Level teacher was very enthusiastic about chemistry which made me interested in the subject. I liked that you could figure out what happens in reactions and that you can do experiments to work things out too. I really liked the practical and the theoretical aspects, it means that no two days are the same.

Chemistry was my favourite subject at school. I applied for chemistry degrees at university not only because I enjoyed it and wanted a career in science (my initial idea was in pharmaceuticals), but because I realised that even if I change my mind in years to come, chemistry/science gives you a good foundation to do many different jobs. This is because it requires a wide range of skills including being able to problem solve, write reports, conduct analytical work, creative thinking, etc!

I opted to study Chemistry over Medicine because I really enjoyed the subject, and loved the idea of being able to create new things, understand where things come from, and possibly even contribute to the development of knowledge. Apart from that I really liked how you could tackle chemical problem using a few underlying principles, which means there is less time spent memorizing things, and more time spent working on problems.
