Carbon. We’re all carbon-based lifeforms (sorry for the Star Trekism), although to echo Ruhina’s answer science fiction writers like proposing silicon based life forms (they appeared on Dr Who MANY years ago). Plus the Nobel prizes for Buckyballs and graphene show that there’s great science to be done on just the basic element, never mind the mindboggling number of compounds it forms.
I’d say Oxygen – it’s pretty cool because we need it to keep going, although there are organisms that are poisoned by it! And there’s loads of it all over the place – be it trapped in rocks, or in our atmosphere.
And apparently liquid oxygen makes for a pretty hardcore BBQ starter 😉
