• Question: As a polymer scientist do you use any theoretical models of any sort for any calculations or predictions?

As my group are based in an engineering department, we often use models to understand our work better, make predictions or validate results. As I’m still new to the field – the (occasional) models I work with are very basic!

Ahoy ! I don’t use models as such, but I do use calculations to work out how much polymer to add onto my proteins to make sure I cover them by the right amount. I’ll be doing some modelling when working on another project, although will be liaising with a mathematician to build the models since that kind of maths isn’t my forte.

I study composites and their properties are often compared to theoretical calculations. A lot of the property data we measure is also used in computer-aided design models.

I don’t use much modelling at the moment but I am going to start using some basic modelling to look at my polymers soon. I do use predictions to look at how much of the monomer goes into the polymers just like Thomas.
